Sword of the Spirit

Back

In the following verses, We find Jesus speaking the Word of God in resisting the attacks of Satan.

Matthew 4:1-11 Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.
2. And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.
3. And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread.
4. But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.
5. Then the devil taketh him up into the holy city, and setteth him on a pinnacle of the temple,
6. And saith unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down: for it is written, He shall give his angels charge concerning thee: and in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
7. Jesus said unto him, It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
8. Again, the devil taketh him up into an exceeding high mountain, and sheweth him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory of them;
9. And saith unto him, All these things will I give thee, if thou wilt fall down and worship me.
10. Then saith Jesus unto him, Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
11. Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

Notice: that Satan tempted him with suggestions. The devil can’t force us to do anything, he can only make suggestions.

In Genesis 3:1-7 Satan used the same tricks on Eve, she yielded to the desire of her eyes etc. Praise God, The Lord Jesus never yielded!

Jesus resisted Satan from his position as the son of man, the son of God and not from the position of his deity, as God the Son.

You and I have available to us the same weapon that Jesus used; the sword of the spirit - the word of God.

You and I can also resist Satan in the same way. Before we accepted Christ into our lives we were enslaved to sin and held captive by Satan; we could not resist nor defeat him. (see Ephesians ch. 2)

Praise God for our champion the Lord Jesus Christ, who came to this earth and totally defeated Satan in our behalf!!!

The Lord has delivered us from the bondage of Satan and has legally seated us with him in the heavenly places (see Ephesions 2:6) a place of victory and position, as children of God.

We do not have to defeat Satan only resist him.

James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

To be effective in resisting Satan one must know who they are in Christ and what Christ obtained for them We find these things out by studying God’s word.

One must become familiar with the sword that God has provided.

Notice the following scripture:

Hebrews 4:12 For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

God has given to us armor - Why?

Ephesians 6:10-12  Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might.
11 Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.
12 For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.
13 Wherefore take unto you the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.
14 Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness;
15 And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;
16 Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.
17 And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God:

The word of God becomes an effective offensive sword when we speak it forth from our mouths.

  • What would you do if you had a sword in your hand and a wild animal attacked you or your children?

1Peter 5:8 Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

  • Ever watch a lion (TV etc.) stalk it’s prey? The animals that are strong, usually escape. You and I must be strong in the Lord. To be strong in the Lord, we must realize what it means to be a Christian and what the Bible says about Christians.

  • Some things about your sword

    The Bible was given to us by the inspiration of the Holy Ghost, inspiration literally means God breathed. Under the divine influence of God, men spoke and wrote down the Holy Scriptures ( Jeremiah 36:2, Acts 1:16, and 2 Peter 3:15-16 ) Jesus said “ Man does not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God ( Matt. 4:4 ) Gods word gives instruction in every area of life, from how to know God, to how to
    raise our children. The word of the Lord shall endure forever ( 1 Peter 1:25 ).

    2 Timothy 3:16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.

    2 Peter 1:21 For prophesy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.

    2 Timothy 3:15 And from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

    1 John 5:13 These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.

    Consider:

    Revelation 19:21 And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which [sword] proceeded out of his mouth: and all the fowls were filled with their flesh.

    Remember: Speaking God’s Word is using your sword!
