Marriage

HEBREWS 13:4   Marriage is honorable in all, and the bed undefiled: but whoremongers and adulterers God will judge.

MARK 10:6-9   But from the beginning of the creation God made them male and female.
Vs.7   For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and cleave to his wife;
Vs.8   And they twain shall be one flesh: so then they are no more twain, but one flesh.
Vs.9   What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.

1.  Duties of Husbands

Be Satisfied with Wife

PROVERBS 5:18-19   Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.
Vs.19   Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breast satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.

ECCLESIASTES 9:9   Live joyfully with the wife whom thou lovest all the days of the life of thy vanity, which he hath given thee under the sun, all the days of thy vanity: for that is thy portion in this life, and in thy labor which thou takest under the sun.

Love his Wife

EPHESIANS 5:28,   So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself.

COLOSSIANS 3:19   Husbands, love your wives, and be not bitter against them.

 Give Affection to Wife

1 CORINTHIANS 7:3-5   Let the husband render to his wife the affection that is due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband.
Vs.4   The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.
Vs.5   Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer....( NKJV )

Give Honor to Wife

1 PETER 3:7   Likewise ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honor unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.

Provide for Family

GENESIS 3:19   In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.

2 THESSALONIANS 3:11-12   For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies.
Vs.12   Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they eat their own bread.

1 TIMOTHY 5:8   But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.

2.  Headship of Husbands

  Established by God

GENESIS 3:16   Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.

1 CORINTHIANS 11:3   But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

EPHESIANS 5:23   For the husband is head of the wife, even as Christ is head of the church: and he is savior of the body.

3.  Duties of Wives

 Give Affection to Husband

1 CORINTHIANS 7:3-5   Vs.3    Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband.  ( NKJV )

 Submit to Husband

EPHESIANS 5:22   Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord.

COLOSSIANS 3:18   Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord.

 Not to usurp Authority

1 TIMOTHY 2:11-12   Let a woman learn in silence with all submission.
Vs.12   And I do not permit a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over a man but to be in silence. ( NKJV )

 Be keepers at home

TITUS 2:3-5   The aged women likewise, that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
Vs.4   That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
Vs.5   To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

 Adorning of Wife

1 PETER 3:3-5   Whose adorning let it not be that outward adoring of plaiting the hair, and of wearing of gold, or of putting on of apparel;
Vs.4   But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price.
Vs.5   For after this manner in the old time the holy women also, who trusted in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection unto their own husbands.

1 TIMOTHY 2:9-10   In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamfacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array.
Vs10   But  which becometh women professing godliness with good works.

 Reverance her Husband

EPHESIANS 5:33   Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband.

 A Virtuious Wife

PROVERBS 31:10-30   Who can find a virtuous wife? for her worth is far above rubies.
Vs.11   The heart of her husband safely trusts her;
Vs.12   She does him good and not evil, all the days of her life.
Vs.13   She seeks wool and flax, and willingly works with her hands.
Vs.14   She is like the merchant ships, she brings her food from afar.
Vs.15   She also rises while it is yet night, and provides food for her household, and a
            portion for her maidservants.
Vs.16   She considers a field and buys it; from her profits she plants a vineyard.
Vs.17   She girds herself with strength, and strengthens her arms.
Vs.18   She perceives that her merchandise is good, and her lamp does not go out by
            night.
Vs.19   She stretches out her hands to the distaff, and her hand holds the spindle.
Vs.20   She extends her hand to the poor, yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy.
Vs.21   She is not afraid of snow for her household, For all her household is clothed with
            scarlet.
Vs.22   She makes tapestry for herself; her clothing is fine linen and purple.
Vs.23   Her husband is known in the gates, when he sits among the elders of the land.
Vs.24   She makes linen garments and sells them, and supplies sashes for the merchants.
Vs.25   Strength and honor are her clothing; she shall rejoice in time to come.
Vs.26   She opens her mouth with wisdom, and on her tongue is the law of kindness.
Vs.27   She watches over the ways of her household, and does not eat the bread of
            idleness.
Vs.28   Her children rise up and call her blessed; her husband also and he praises her.
Vs.29   Many daughters have done well, but you excel them all.
Vs.30   Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall
            be praised.

4.  Children

 A Blessing of God

PSALMS 127:3   Lo, children are an heritage of the Lord: and the fruit of the womb is his reward.

PSALMS 127:4-5   As arrows are in the hand of a mighty man; so are children of the youth.
Vs.5   Happy is the man that hath his quiver full of them: they shall not be ashamed, but they shall speak with the enemies in the gate.

PROVERBS 17:6   Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.

 Correction of Children

PROVERBS13:24   He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes ( promptly ).

PROVERBS 19:18   Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying.

PROVERBS 22:15   Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.

PROVERBS 29:15   The rod and the reproof give wisdom: but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame.

 Correction not to be Unjust

EPHESIANS 6:4   And ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

COLOSSIANS 3:21   Fathers, provoke not your children to anger, lest they be discouraged.

Correction must be done out of love, for the good of the child. Punishment, without love
and because of selfish reasons, is abuse.  Children must be taught right from wrong, not
only by some form of correction, but also, by example.

Jesus said “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you”  We must treat our
children the way we would want to be treated.

 Children are to honor their Parents

EPHESIANS 6:1-3   Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right.
Vs.2   Honor thy father and mother; which is the first commandment with promise
Vs.3   That it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.

PROVERBS 23:22   Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.

5.  The Elderly

1 TIMOTHY 5:1-2   Rebuke not an elder, but entreat him as a father; and the younger men as brethren;
Vs.2   The elderly women as mothers; the younger as sisters, with all purity.

TITUS 2:2   Aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, charity, in patience.

TITUS 2:3-4   The aged women likewise that they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
Vs.4   That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children.

LEVITICUS 19:32   Thou shall rise up before the gray head and honor the face of the old man.

1 TIMOTHY 5:1   Rebuke not an elder, but entreat him as a father.
